In my city, I organized a community for our favorite game back in 2023. We’ve been meeting every Monday for two years now, and sometimes we hold casual tournaments. To attract newcomers, we don’t just play in the Standard format but also in formats with a limited number of cards.
This spring, for example, we played using strictly the white starter decks (excluding the Allies draft set). The deck I’m sharing here comes from that tournament. The idea was that there would be a lot of Grievus decks—that is, all-red decks—so Kylo Ren could have good color prediction.
However, I didn’t want to pair Kylo with Phasma because there wouldn’t be enough health. For Kylo’s ability, it’s worth even just using one die.
So I started looking for options. It occurred to me that there aren’t many characters, so they’d repeat often, making the card Emulate super useful. That’s why I decided to take Grievus with a Droid. This combo not only allows me to use Emulate almost every time—since there’s a high chance that the characters will match on both Grievus and Kylo—but also gives me strong red and offsets Grievus’s field advantage. Even if my opponent picks Grievus’s field, I still get the same ability when I capture it.
For my own field, I chose Obi-Wan’s Hut so Grievuses wouldn’t get shields and wouldn’t select my field at the start. Having +2 shields at the start is a big deal.
The final idea was to keep Kylo alive longer. To do that, I played Praetorians to grant Guardian, but not on Kylo himself. I also included Crash Landing so I could control where the damage goes. This also helped because there are many dice with modifiers in the starters.
Well, almost everything worked as planned. The only thing was that I only got to play Emulate once during all my games!
